Seriously... by o-kemono Seriously... by o-kemono
I think it was time I posted something that might stop the traffic of jokes on my last name on FA and DA and also IRL. Seriously, Im not in high school anymore so why are people still making "unique" jokes based off my last name?

Yes, my last name is Cockburn, but its not connected to the penis jokes that come first in everyones mind. Cockburn is a Scottish Clan name. Cockburn was traditionally pronounced Coburn, Kocburn, Cockburne and Coccburna. Many people spell their name without the CK or just Coburn due to dialectal influences, even in the modern days now where when people hear "cock" they think of "penis".

As everyone knows ( hopefully ) Cock is another word for Rooster. Having "burn" on the end of it means something else besides "cooking". The word "burn" in Cockburn means Rooster's Fury. The Cockburn Clan were warriors that fought in the Bannockburn in 1314 and other battles for the freedom of Scotland. The Cockburn Clan has their own Coat in Arms with an image of a Rooster perched on a branch or three red Roosters on a silver shield as well as their own clan kilt/tartan plaid and good chunk of land in Scotland. This was used back in medieval Scotland.

Our family motto is is Accendit Cantu which translates to: "He animates by crowing" or "He rouses us in song". A perfect motto for musicians and artists and those who uses words and sound as power.

Throughout the years, the Cockburn's were numerous knights, judges, musicians, doctors and artists.

For more information about the Cockburn Clan, please look online and PLEASE, enough jokes -_-;;

Even I can relate to this situation. With the surname "Slazus”, school was not a very pleasant experience. If fact, this particular surname is so unique that my family is the only one with this name in Southern Africa.

Strange that people still tend to make fun of some individuals’ surnames, especially in a country that has several traditional cultures. For example, one of my best friends have the surname of “Oor” (Translated form Afrikaans, it means “Ear”) and yet it was a commonly accepted name.

In the end, it all depends on the commonly accepted culture of the particular area at that particular time period. Some are fortunate, whilst others are not (which the latter is me).
All I can say is: “Take pride in your ancestry, for it is a part of what makes you unique.”

Indeed. Jokes about people's names are so middle school.

My girlfriend's from America and she teases me every time we go to the train station about "Cockburn Central" while I try to convince her it's pronounced "Koh-burn". >.>
