Seriously... by o-kemono Seriously... by o-kemono
I think it was time I posted something that might stop the traffic of jokes on my last name on FA and DA and also IRL. Seriously, Im not in high school anymore so why are people still making "unique" jokes based off my last name?

Yes, my last name is Cockburn, but its not connected to the penis jokes that come first in everyones mind. Cockburn is a Scottish Clan name. Cockburn was traditionally pronounced Coburn, Kocburn, Cockburne and Coccburna. Many people spell their name without the CK or just Coburn due to dialectal influences, even in the modern days now where when people hear "cock" they think of "penis".

As everyone knows ( hopefully ) Cock is another word for Rooster. Having "burn" on the end of it means something else besides "cooking". The word "burn" in Cockburn means Rooster's Fury. The Cockburn Clan were warriors that fought in the Bannockburn in 1314 and other battles for the freedom of Scotland. The Cockburn Clan has their own Coat in Arms with an image of a Rooster perched on a branch or three red Roosters on a silver shield as well as their own clan kilt/tartan plaid and good chunk of land in Scotland. This was used back in medieval Scotland.

Our family motto is is Accendit Cantu which translates to: "He animates by crowing" or "He rouses us in song". A perfect motto for musicians and artists and those who uses words and sound as power.

Throughout the years, the Cockburn's were numerous knights, judges, musicians, doctors and artists.

For more information about the Cockburn Clan, please look online and PLEASE, enough jokes -_-;;

Even I can relate to this situation. With the surname "Slazus”, school was not a very pleasant experience. If fact, this particular surname is so unique that my family is the only one with this name in Southern Africa.

Strange that people still tend to make fun of some individuals’ surnames, especially in a country that has several traditional cultures. For example, one of my best friends have the surname of “Oor” (Translated form Afrikaans, it means “Ear”) and yet it was a commonly accepted name.

In the end, it all depends on the commonly accepted culture of the particular area at that particular time period. Some are fortunate, whilst others are not (which the latter is me).
All I can say is: “Take pride in your ancestry, for it is a part of what makes you unique.”

Indeed. Jokes about people's names are so middle school.

My girlfriend's from America and she teases me every time we go to the train station about "Cockburn Central" while I try to convince her it's pronounced "Koh-burn". >.>

"Cockburn" just makes me think of Bruce Cockburn, actually. I didn't even realize it was something people would make jokes out of.

When I first saw your name, I was like: "Damn, I bet, this guy would be rich if he got a Euro for every joke about his name..."
But seriously, don't let it get to you. It's a cool name with a history that's actually worth mentioning! Plus: Scottish history is a pretty interesting topic, and I always found the battle of Bannockburn especially interesting to read about... So, hearing that your clansmen actually fought there makes your name one, that can be worn with even more pride!

Ugh, sorry to hear about you getting all the bad puns, but thank you for the education. ^_^
My last name just stems from "Pierre's Son", which isn't nearly as interesting. XD

I've always thought your name was cool. People who makes jokes about 'cock' and such in a perverse matter tend to be just plain immature.

Such a wonderful amount of history to your last name. I love names with such history!

I always wondered what was with that name...but I couldn't believe the people who made those immature jokes about it. Seriously guys?

Well, hopefully this should stop most of it.

I liked the art, regarding this. ^_^

Eeee... ouch. I thought I had it bad.
Before I met my dad and changed my last name to Adams, I used to be a "Hurt."
The things I would get told. . .

As someone who's last name is Johnson I feel your pain (though most likely not as much)... That's why I'm just going to name my kid "Peter Wang Johnson" so he's totally screwed for life...

Or Richard, so he'd have the nickname "Dick"

Hehehe, you said penis.

Y'know, I hadn't ever thought of making any sort of jab at your last name; I figured it had a meaning of some sort.

That, and I have matured past the high-school stage long ago. I'm still persistently amused by 'adults' that will still act this way.

Alex of the Rooster's Fury? :0

I'm sorry you get teased for your name... With a name like Patience I can totally empathize and I know how frustrating it is when people think it's clever to be immature. I have lived on this planet for 20+ years and they STILL think it's funny to tell me to 'have patience' or ask 'are you really patient?' or 'IS THAT YOUR REAL NAME?' People need to die, seriously :| Don't let the losers get ya down.
