This was a passing idea I had. The sad thing is I find this very true no matter what furry website you go to. I feel in order to have your works seen by the general community, you have to create something based on what the "rules" states.

DISCUSS? I would like to know what you think of this.

Looks like I'm the rule breaker... also I prefer SFW furs. That means disagree.

In truth something does not have to fit in to any of thse to be nice. I have friends who draw simple sfw pics, and i love them! ^^

I'm not a full furry (I do play as a furry on Second Life and have a caracal that I draw occasions as my fursona, mainly if I feel sad or in deep thought) but I kind have to disagree with some of those rules. Shoot some of my friends who are full furries, would disagree with them. Not all furries are into fetishes least of the sexual kind. That sorta gives furries a bad name to be honest.

It's difficult...When we discuss about sexual preferences, we have to expect being flamed when our preferences are different from other people that are "straight". I like every form of sexuality, as long as both parts are happy and consenting (yes, animals can consent too, through non-verbal body language.)
As for the quality of drawing...Everyone has their own form of expression. There is no need to criticize someone's drawing, when it is expressed with the heart :(
Ah, I feel so dumb at writing this, when I myself don't like vorarephilia...
"Some furries will express their love, some furries only think of smut"...It's Bullshit. Everyone is free.

I'm afraid I must disagree. I look at random sketches. I check them and like them, the way they are.
I don't look for sexy or well-proportioned girls.
I just look for something that someone did with his/her heart.
Yeah, I'm a furry, but not a pervert.

I tend to keep clothes on my furries, give them normal-sized boobs, and keep it non-sexualized. I don't care if it's not good enough for their rules, because in my opinion, "if it's good enough for me it's good enough to be."

I agree. And it applies to any art site and any kind of artwork. I was thinking lately - if all artists publishing on the Internet could subconciously get rid of all influences and fandom popularity and would create only based on personal interests and tastes, then perhaps it would be much more interesting.

A bit of topic, about popularity. If people are buying commissions they are mostly buying the name of an artist, not their artwork. So first an artist have to become cool and popular. Of course it's a common sense that an artist need to have some recognizable style and abilities to become successful. But everybody knows that there are a bunch of incredibly talented people, with style and abilities, who are underrated.

I dont believe in most of these rules, Im a furry but I dont like what people are doing (my opinion please dont argue Ive had enough of people trying to start arguments) I want to start a furry group on here for furry art that does not involve nudety because some furries dont like running in to them (if anyone knows how) But still good drawing.

I don't know, I recently joined FA and it seems a lot better then DA is at getting attention.

The list kinda makes sense though, I mean you listed off like everything that makes a good picture. If it is not well drawn or is a fetish you like... what is motivating you to looking at it? :P There is a lot of stuff out there so if the artist is drawing for an audience then they should try to give the audience what they want.

When I draw I just think "I owe the audience nothing, and they owe me nothing" If I draw something someone likes they can comment and stuff, but if people do not like a particular picture I do not expect people to comment despite not having any motivation to do so.

I dono, that is just my two cents. :P

I have NO sympathy for artists who bitch about not getting as many views as a popular artist as if views is something you're entitled to.

Too many artists I think gets stuck with this idea that "Oooh, I'm gonna express MYSELF and then people will flock and admire ME for being so clever and spiritual and emotional" and when that doesn't happen, they complain about the audience being stupid instead of acknowledging that the audience might simply have their own needs an interests beyond validating your art.

If you wanna make something more off the beaten track, you can still find an audience for it if you work hard and are smart about it. But you'll have to accept the fact that your audience will be smaller than those who work in a popular style.

just like how you won't catch as big a fish in a quiet forest lake as someone who goes ocean-fishing. Complaining about this on account that you both dipped a hook in water, so you deserve equally big fish would be pretty silly.

I think "well drawn anatomy" makes sense, as it's normal to expect aesthetically pleasing art.
The rest is... blegh. They might arouse more interest, but are they really rules for most furries? I think you're going a bit far, generalizing everything.

Sad but true. When it come to furries, it seem they can't think with anything but with their hormone... and miss the point of good art.

Though for the anatomy rule, that would apply to any artists, not just furries. When you draw a cat and it looks more like an oversize rat, furry or not, it raise some issue :)

The amount of stuff I used to draw just to generate hits to my pages... I had zero interest in it, but I felt that to have anything else seen, to get watchers, I had to. Granted, now some of my stuff that I do enjoy gets favorites for the same reasons...

Porn is popular but I think that rule can really be adjusted to the main interests of any group. People don't care about things being unique or well-done, they just want the same old thing. So yes, some good, clean art is overlooked in the furry fandom (as is good art of a fetish people don't like) but well-done music gets overlooked in favour of more repetitive and indistinguishable pop songs. It happens with other media as well. There are original games and movies but mostly people put their attention into things that they already know people like. That's why things like Tekken, Final Fantasy, Halo, Call of Duty and Mario have so many, very similar games. In movies we're still making Batman and Spiderman movies despite Batman being something like 70 years old. Comfort and familiarity win out against innovation with risk.

Aye very true. As in just about every other category of creations. As from that if the works were 'real' it would show life itself in a nutshell... (working rules of the living form.. mammals in particular) etc.

The things you are mentioning are ones which define the term "taste" if you want to call it that. Many furries act by these criteria, and therefore it is their taste. So yeah, I guess generally speaking you are right.

However, there are many who think otherwise. There has to be something appealing in the picture, that's a fact. When I first saw one of your pictures, I had no idea who you were, and it was pretty different from everything I have ever seen before. But not because there was no sex, not even a nipple. Your art style is a bit too cartoony to call it realistic or correctly proportioned, so that's not it either (and don't get me wrong here ;) it's perfect, just not realistic). What makes the difference is the authenticity, the picture must be believable, it has to give me this harmonic kind of feeling. The artist has to know what he or she is doing, so there have to be no obvious flaws, and there are no quick'n'dirty-solutions. If it looks cheap, I don't care about the picture. And it doesn't even take many lines for skilled artists to make something good.

I don't know where I'm going with this. :D I guess you're right in that many act the way you describe it, but there are also many which have higher demands to artwork. Otherwise you wouldn't have so many followers, would you?

Agreed, sad fact that if you want to be a popular furry artist you have to cater to a very picky audience. You can never please enough people to not get flamed by most everyone else. That is why I just draw whatever makes myself happy and don't care about favs or comments whether positive or negative.

I was about to mention it's bias.
Until I read the description (which people seem forget to do these days...)
Yes...and then no again. That popular artist subject itches. There are a vast number of talented artist that get overshadowed.
I'm not saying to completely ignore popular artists, but hey. Being open minded is probably the hardest thing to do in the first place.

As for me, the picture in question must be anatomically reasonable or I have to go outside. xD;
Anyway that's my two cents.

well thats not fair in the slightest. You do whatever art you wanna do, and if people don't like it, to flippin bad :/Doesn't need to be sexual in any way. Yes we all have our own likes and dislikes, fetishes, turn on's, what have you. But art should be appreciated weather it's yiffy or not. But to each is own. Very cute picture though :3
